This competition was organised by the Blackbelt
Club under the auspices of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF). The
Guest-of-Honour at the event was COL (RET) Kwan Yue Yeong, Executive Director
of the Singapore Sports Council.
The free-style plank-breaking event was the highlight of the competition. Demanding tremendous
technique, precision and mental strength, all the participants produced top class performances to leave the
audience entralled.
Led by Gao Jing Xiang, the Acme Taekwondo A team won the event with 13.95 points. Pasir
Ris South Community Club had to settle for second place with 13.85 points, followed by Cheng San Community Club
A team.
The 19 year-old jing Xiang also came in first in the flying sidekick event, recording a height
of 3.5m. Second place went to his team-mate Chen Yan Xiong. The pairjoined another two from their team, Zhuang
Ming Quan and Zhuang Ai Ling, to clinch second spot in the Taekwondo Aerobics event with 13.95 points.
Despite the impressive results, Tan Cheng Hui, the coach of Acme Taekwondo A team, felt
that his charges did not really perform to their true ability. "They put in two months, of training for this
competition, but I still feel that they can do better," the coach said. "Their performance was not as
I expected. It is no surprise they won, as half the team are members of the national taekwondo team. Thus, it is
only right that they have a higher level of skill compared to other teams."
Other events saw 17 year-old Tang Ming Hui win the jumping frontkick event with a height
of 2.5m, and Xu Wei Jie pipping Sun Li Xing to the title for Blackbelt pattern (individual) with a score of 26.95.
