Six men and four women have been selected for the Brunei SEA Games in August.
The team is currently training six days-a-week. Coach Park Hyun Sook is
happy with the progress so far: "The team is doing very well now. At this
stage, we are fine-tuning our technique and skills. We also watch videotapes
of the strong opposition like the Filipinos, Thais and Vietnamese. At least
that will let us have a rough idea of their skill level." Despite being
actively involved in the SEA Games' training sessions, coach Park will not
be travelling to Brunei with the team due to pregnancy and Wong Liang Ming
will take over the final preparation of the team for the Games. As a result,
Wong, a four-time SEA Games gold medallist, has to sacrifice her chance
of adding to her career medal haul to take on the coaching assignment. |
The Singapore taekwondo team has quite a number
of young hopefuls. Abdul Ra'uf will be making his SEA Games debut and he
is confident of his chances. "I think I stand a good chance to win a medal,"
the young man said. "If I go there and try myvery best, I feel I can compete
against the region's best." For Ong Bee Lan, this will be her fourth SEA Games. She won silver medals in the '93 and '97 SEA Games. So the question is can she,go one better and bring back the gold? "That is, my goal. My preparations are fine but the chances of winning the gold depends a lot on the actual day of competition. The one who makes the least mistakes will win it."
"I just have to go down there try my very best and see how I fare among the region's best."--- Abdul Ra'uf |
