Steven ChongSteven Choong Shunning the Limelight

Shifting uneasily in his seat, Steven asked: "Do I really have to do this? hate publicity you know." As much as he hated it, Steven had to face the fact that with our camera locked-on to him, there was no escape.

Besides his regular job, Steven also helps out in the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) as Chairman of the Finance Committee. In other words, he makes sure that the STFs funds are being used wisely. Although in this appointment for less than a year, Steven has done such a great job that he received another important portfolio in the STF.
This year is STFs Silver Jubilee. 25 years of excellence in taekwondo. Steven was appointed Chairman of the Silver Jubilee cum 2nd Taekwondo Day Walk-a-jog '99 Organising Committee. After months of careful planning, the birthday celebration will take place on 25 July.
Steven allowed us a peek at his plans: "Taekwondo Day falls annually in July, and this is our Silver Jubilee year. So, I had the idea of holding the two events together on 25 July. I checked it out in the calendar and so suitably 25 July was a Sunday. A wonderful coincidence wasn't it?"
The STF Silver Jubilee cum 2nd Taekwondo Day will take place at Toa Payoh Sports Hall on 25 July 1999. Starting in the morning, there will be a 1.7km walk-a-jog, taekwondo demonstrations, taekwondo aerobics and other exciting programmes suitable for the young and old. Said Steven,

"The message we want to convey is that taekwondo is for all ages. It builds teamwork, discipline, character and sporting spirit. Other than keeping fit, it also keeps children off the streets and off trouble." The occasion will be graced by, Minister for Horne Affairs, Mr Wong Kan Seng. 'We are really honoured that Minister Wong has accepted our invitation to be present on that day," Steven added. 'It really means a lot to us." The celebrations will not be just for STF's members or their families and friends. The public is welcome to join inthe fun as well. "We would love to share our joy with everyone." Steven said.
In a move to do something meaningful

Steven Chong"The message we want to convey is that taekwondo is meant for all ages. It builts teamwork, discipline, character and sporting Other than fit, it also keeps children off the streets and off trouble.

for the society, STF members will raise funds through pledge cards and part of the proceeds will go to Ren Ci Hospital and Asian Women Welfare Association (AWWA). Steven explained: "We are trying to put across the fact that taekwondo is not a violent sport. The true spirit of taekwondo is far from being violent. It cultivates, among other things, the values of sharing and caring. We care and we want to extend a helping hand to people who need help."
The remainder of the proceeds from the fund-raising will go to the STF Development Fund, where it will be used for the training and development of the taekwondo national youth teams. 'Developing our young talent is very important as future successes will depend on them.'
Looking at the blueprint of Steven's plans for the big day on 25 July, one soon realises that his name is hardly mentioned. Steven chuckled and said: "I told you, didn't I? I hate publicity. I am more of a backroom man and I don't see the need to make it so obvious that I came up with the plans. You will not see a title like 'Chairrnan of organising committee - Steven Chong:. My committee members execute my plans and they deserve the recognition more. I willjust enjoy my behind-the-scenes role."
