Taekwondo Tournament 1997

The competitors before the competition
Its serenity and smiles now, but just wait till the battle begins!
 

Europa Spex 2000 logoTHE Europa Cup Taekwondo Tournament was held on 20 December 1997 at Whampoa Community Club. Sponsored by Europa Holdings Pte. Ltd, Singapore Pools Pte Ltd and Singapore Sports Council, the event attracted 127 participants from 10 taekwondo training centres. 
    The tournament is part of the SPEX 2000 Europa Taekwondo Training Scheme which had been devised with the following objectives: 

  • encourage youths with potential to take up the sport at a competitive level;
  • help them develop their skills;
  • provide them with ample opportunities to test their skills in a competitive environment; and
  • prepare them for the Development Squad

    Mr Choo Wee Kiang, MP for Jalan Besar GRC, was the Guest-of-Honour for the event. in the end, Paya Lebar Training Centre emerged overall champions with its haul of three gold medals in the male fin weight, male light weight and female fin weight categories. Pasir Ris South was a close second, albeit having won the most number of medals, with two golds in the male fly weight and male light heavy weight categories. Third place went to Serangoon, who won golds in the male heavy weight and female bantam weight categories. 
    All training centres, with the exception of Maris Stella and St Teresa, will have representatives for the overseas training stint that has been promised to the gold medal winners in this competition.
