FOR THE FIRST TIME in its history, the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) organised a Taekwondo Day, held at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall on 26 July 1998. To become an annual affair, the event is3 held to celebrate the founding of the STF.
According to the Honorary Secretary of the STF, Mr Lim Teong Chin, along with celebrating the anniversary, the day is also an opportunity to recognise individuals, be they officials, athletes or individuals, for their contributions and support to the Organisation.
Some of the highlights at this year's event were the unveiling of the new STF logo, the release of an official federation song and the launch of a new referees' book. Interestingly, the song was penned byann Hussein and Shahul Hameed of Gingerbread. Said Mr Lim, "We've wanted a song for a long time. Basically, the idea was to motivate members to perform through lyrics and music, which would psychologically tune them to higher achievement. When the opportunity to get a famous local band like Gingerbread to do it came along, through Mr Dennis Foo, STF Patron, we did not hesitate. And I think the end result has met our objective."
As for the reason behind the new referees' book, it is meant to be an easy reference guide to the new rules of the sport implemented recently The book, written by Mr Lim, with a foreword by Dr Kim Un Yong, the President of the World Taekwondo Federation (the world governing body of taekwondo), is also meant to mentally prepare referees before competitions, allowing them to refresh their memory before competitions.
The day also saw long service awards and commendation certificates awarded to five individuals who have served taekwondo untiringly over the years. Miss Tong Poey Lan (12 years) and Ms Jolene Ang (10 years) have been indispensable to the STF and rightly, they were presented with long service awards for their effort. For their contributions to the Blackbeit Club and the Welfare and Social Committee respectively, Mr Sam Tan Cheah Her and Mr Ng Hwa Ann were presented with commendation certificates. Mr Roger Teo, former President of the STF, was given special recognition for his outstanding leadership during his term of office.
