14th Men's & 7th Women's

World Taekwondo Championships

The Participants   The 14th Men's & 7th Women's World Taekwondo n Championships was held from 31 May-6 June 1999 in Edmonton, Canada. 74 countries took part in the event.
The Singapore Taekwondo Federation managed to send a team comprising of three officials and five players. They were:
Head of Team        Lim Teong Chin
Team Manager      Stanley Yeo Boon Thiang
Coach                   Park Hyun Sook
Players                  Wong Liang Ming (Captain)
                             Png Chee Siang
                             S Sinnathurai
                             Joyce Chong Ai Lin
                             Ong Bee Lan

 

The fight     Three of our exponents, S Sinnathurai, Wong Liang Ming and Ong Bee Lan, made it to the second round. In the second round, Sinnathurai lost (0-3) to Sedat Bekdemir of Turkey who eventually reached the third round. Wong Liang Ming lost (1-2) to Kadriye Selimogou of Turkey who was a two-time European champion. After defeating Liang Ming, she went on to win the bronze medal. Ong Bee Lan lost (2-5) to Kang Hae-Eun of South Korea, the eventual champion.
     As for Png Chee Siang and Joyce Chong, they lost (2-5) to Yalei Yan of China and (1-5) to Jennifer Srutowski of USA respectively.
