TWO MEDALS FOR SINGAPORE IN

ASIAN TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIPS

FOUR-TIME SEA Games gold medallist Wong Liang Ming and S Sinnathurai won a bronze meal each in the 13th Asian Taekwondo Championships. The event, which was held from 15 to 17 MAy 1998 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, attracted 22 countries including taekwondo 'super powers' Korea and Chinese Taipei.
    Wong reached the semi-final after eliminating Prajakta Mishal of India. Her porgress to the final was stopped by Hye Young Shim of Korea. Neverthelss, Hye did not receive her final spot on a platter. Wong mase her opponent work extremely hard during the match. Sinnathurai earned his semi-final berth by overcoming a strong challenge from India's Manoj Kanojia. In the battle for the final spot, he was narrowly edged by Meng Fan An of Chinses Taipei.It was a touch and go affair between the two combatants, with Sinnathurai taking the lead at one stage.
    Two other members of the Singapore team made it through the first round. They were Abdul Rauf and Lim Soo Ee. Abdiul beat Wong Ngor Ming of Hongkong and lost to Thit Lwin of Myanmar, while Lim Soo Ee defeated Ng Yeun Yan, also of Hongkong. Her progress in the competition was stop ped short by Punya Dissoi of Thailand.
    All in all, it was a good outing for the team.
